Teach a Girl to Code and She'll Change the World
At Girls Who Code, we believe that all girls are capable of making a positive impact on the world through computer science. That's why we're leading the movement to close the gender gap in technology and change the image of what a programmer looks like and does. To close this gap, we must teach girls not only how to positively impact their community through code, but also how to be brave and resilient -- which has enormous impact on how they approach challenges and whether they stick with coding in the years to come. Since its inception in 2012, Girls Who Code has been leading this movement. The international organization has reached nearly 185,000 young girls, who are choosing to major in CS and related fields at 15 times the national average; and in Kansas Girls Who Code's reach spans from Dodge City to Kansas City!
Join Claudia Hampton, Associate of Community Partnerships & Outreach at Girls Who Code, for a talk about embracing the challenge to close the gender gap in technology by inspiring and equipping girls in your community with the computing skills, bravery, and resilience they need to succeed in the 21st century. Together, you will discuss how to join the movement for gender parity in your own schools, libraries, and community centers, participate in hands-on activities that you can walk away with, and engage in a design thinking activity to help you bring code and digital equity to your community.

Active Learning
Listen to students share their active learning journey experience in a different way than whole classroom PBL or traditional learning. Our PBL Academy is currently in year 3 and the students speaking have been on the ride since day one. The mission of the PBL Academy is to strive for active individual learning in a space designed for organized chaos and messiness. We will walk you through the trials and triumphs on starting a PBL environment, a school within a school. Our environment provides opportunities for students at all levels of learning to dive deeper into their learning targets using a framework for proposals and presentations. The practical application of abstract academic concepts that prepare students for workplace values is demonstrated through their projects. Students learn empathy, passion, compassion, and resilience through the process of presentations.

Quizizz, Quizlet Live, and Socrative!: Creating Fun and Effective Formative Assessment
As educators, we know the value of data. It shapes the way we plan lessons and how we reach students of all abilities. We also know the anxiety and resentment it brings to many of our students.
Acadience (formerly DIBELS), MAPS, State Assessments, and unit tests (to name a few) are a large part of our students' lives, for better or worse.
However, Quizizz, Quizlet Live, and Socrative provide meaningful feedback to educators in a way that entices and excites students of all ages. My students beg for these!
Socrative gives teachers instant access to student learning through quick questions (such as multiple-choice, true/false, and short answer) as well as a ready-to-go exit ticket.  These tools can be used as-is or with minor modifications and need little to no preparation.
Quizizz allows teachers to remove the time restrictions of Kahoot! while students still learn and compete against themselves and one another.
Quizlet Live provides a team building experience where students compete as a group of 3-4 students while they learn and review terms and ideas.

Redesigning our School to Meet the Needs of all Students
Wellington High School is now in their 2nd year of redesign with the state. Last year we incorporated a new online platform (Summit Learning) that addresses personalized blended learning, mentoring, and project based learning. In addition to the platform this year we have moved to a flex-mod schedule that through Infinite Campus and student badges allows students to move throughout their day to choose where, when, and how long they visit a teacher. This offers flexibility and more of a student directed approach. In this session we will briefly cover how the online platform of Summit Learning addresses our school vision and cover how we operate the flex mod schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays using sheets in google and the scanning procedures.

Operationalizing Flexible Professional Learning: Get Your PL in Gear!
Discover and create practical ways to implement flexible and personalized PL environments that support ongoing teacher professional growth. Create PL structures that change HOW PL happens, empowering teachers to be learning leaders. Flexible PL encourages cross-curricular, cross grade-level sharing between novice and expert teachers for ongoing growth/leadership. The purpose of the session is to consider how traditional professional learning sessions with a trainer speaking from the front of the room while scrolling through slides do not meet the needs of the professionals who come with different skill sets, philosophies of education, and understandings of evidence-based best practices in instruction and technology integration. Designing sets of self-paced learning tasks that can be personalized by each attendee to meet his or her own needs is challenging. Knowledge gained in traditional PD settings often has a “knowing-doing gap” resulting in a lack of application in the classroom. As coaches, we knew Professional Development needed to shift to meaningful Professional Learning at our sites in order to become more personalized, flexible, and lead to application within classrooms. Learners at our session will explore how we’ve met that challenge, consider research on adult learning theory and alignment to the ISTE standards, before creating their own flexible professional learning opportunity that will more effectively meet the needs of adult learners at their own future trainings.

These EduProtocols are customizable frames based on classic teaching strategies that have been modernized to help students master content, think critically, and communicate effectively while working collaboratively.

To Infinity and Beyond - Doing More w/ Google Apps Script
The reality of teaching is that sometimes the digital tools we have just don’t always do exactly what we’d like them to be able to do. Knowing some basic coding can help you make light work out of repetitive tasks or add functionality to meet a need. This is where Google Apps Script comes in. It allows you to add a little code to a Google document to make it do “magical” things. What I was amazed by was just how little experience with coding you need to get started!

In this session we’ll briefly cover the basics of Apps Script and do a quick project where you write and run your first Apps Script program. Then you can brag to your students that you can code! If we want to encourage students to think about coding and computer science, it starts with us.

Think this sounds too intimidating? If you’re the kind of person that likes solving puzzles or are at least open to trying new things, Apps Script is worth checking out. No prior knowledge of coding is required for this session - but you’ll definitely pick things up faster if you have some coding experience! Participants will get the most of out this session if they are already mostly proficient in using the G Suite for Education Apps (drive, gmail, slides, sheets, docs, etc.), but anyone with an open mind and a Google account is welcome.

Plickers is a free, interactive tech tool that uses printable "paper clickers" instead of clicker devices. Teachers use the Plickers app and a mobile device to scan student responses. (Students do not need a device!) It is a terrific formative assessment tool, but it can be used for much more than assessment. Teachers can use it for everything from digital exit tickets, checking attendance, or even taking the morning lunch count. Data is collected for each student, and reports can be created to evaluate a class, question/topic, or individual student. Students of all ages, and at all levels, can benefit from using Plickers!

Online Menus for a Block Schedule Elementary Classroom
Online menus is a great way to allow students the opportunity to choose what they are going to work on and provide videos, assignments, and online games! Students rotate through a block schedule (very similar to the way many high schools work) and choose their online assignment to complete throughout the day. This allows you to frontload your work at the beginning of the week and then focus on the needs of your students the rest of the week. Another perk is most of the "frontloading for assignments" can be done online at home!

Internet Safety & Digital Citizenship
As we grow with more and more devices in our school districts and as the world becomes more and more driven by digital devices, applications, social media and more, we owe it to ourselves and students to have open discussions, planned lessons, or integrated lessons around Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety with our students in every class. Not only is it required by CORE standards to integrate this in every class, but it is the right thing to do to help our students be good Digital Citizens when they leave our class. If you want some tips, tricks, and know how to do this within your classroom, come join the fun and discussions that this session will have. You will walk out feeling confident to protect your own digital identity and how to start having the conversation right away with students and also fully developed lesson plans you can use. Bring any device with an internet browser and participate in the discussion.

Need Some #BEARapy? Using a Therapy Dog, Social Media, & Other Tech to Meet Student Needs
Bear, our therapy dog at Halstead Middle School, is a full-time addition this year in the library. In this session, we will share how we got our therapy dog, discuss our process to get board approval and certification, and demonstrate how we use him in our school. A focus for our Redesign is Social and Emotional Learning, and Bear has helped us meet these needs. Using Google Forms and The Zones of Regulation, we are able to see the impact Bear is having on SEL growth in students.

In addition, discover how we use social media tools, like Instagram and Podcasting, to promote reading in our school, using Bear as our star. Students are interacting with his Instagram stories, discussing books online, and even volunteering to do read-alouds and booktalks with Bear. Authors have joined the fun by interacting with our Insta posts. There is a renewed interest in the library because of Bear, and students are wanting to read more just to spend time with him.

Come to our session, meet Bear, and find out how our students are benefiting from this new member of our staff.
